Week One - Take Aways
On Sunday, the 49ers surprised most pundits and fans with how dominant their performance was and the score of 30-7 over the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Here are some of my take aways from week one’s performance.
Coaching - The Wilks Factor
I think a huge amount of credit has to be given to Steve Wilks. Wilks has inherited a great defence, but regardless has been astute, not changed things and taken on board the scheme and run with it.
What did however stand out from the performance, was the speed and aggression that the defence exhibited, best illustrated by Fred Warner’s hit on Najee Harris, early in the game and this set the tone for the rest of the game. Wilks identity is already starting to show.
In my opinion this was the most impressive defensive performance since the 2019 season, and I suspect as the season goes on the defence under Wilks will evolve and become even harder to handle for opposing offensive co-ordinators.
Offence - Kyle’s Playbook.
It is very clear from coach Kyle Shanahan’s statements during the summer he was more than comfortable with Brock Purdy at the helm.
Sunday’s performance and Purdy’s ability to deliver the ball and make the right decisions will only give Shanahan more confidence in expanding the playbook.
The likes of CMC, Deebo, Kittle and Aiyuk are genuine threats and will test opposing defence’s. I am sure everyone will be looking forward to the match up with Dallas in week five on Sunday Night Football.
Special Teams
Special teams are often overlooked, but it's important to have a reliable kicker. It's interesting to hear that there were questions about Jake Moody's selection in the draft, but it seems like he will prove himself and pass the test in upcoming games.
Overall, Sunday's victory has given the fans hope for the season. While there may be ups and downs along the way, it's clear that the team is ready to make a strong push to win their division and secure home field advantage.
