Week 2 of OTA’s – More Reps for Trey & O-Line

The coaches and the team will be back on the field for OTA’s today. What can we expect to learn from the next round of OTA’s?

Reps – Coach Shanahan will continue to use this time to make sure that Trey Lance gets as many reps as possible. The young quarterback has demonstrated that he is focused on the task ahead and has taken on a leadership role in the locker room.

We should not be expecting him to be perfect or “Ready”, this is a learning curve, for Trey Lance, Shanahan, the team, and the players around him. There is no harm in him making mistakes, he will learn more from those and he will grow into the position as time goes.

Offensive Line – Outside of Trent Williams, all the positions on the Offensive Line are up for grabs.

Left Guard – Aaron Banks G#65 – Drafted in 2021. His offensive grade according Pro Football Focus (PFF) is 56.9 and the team will be expecting him to upgrade his skillset and be game ready.

Right Tackle – Mike McGlinchey #69 – Drafted in 2018. He is coming off an injury and all reports indicate he will be to start taking part in team reps in Training Camp. Last season, prior to his injury he ranked 56th (PFF) in Run Blocking and a good overall grade in pass blocking (70.0 PFF). The team will need to factor in whether he will be ready for the season and will need to have a back up veteran or Rookie to cover this position.

Centre – Alex Mack having announced his retirement, the team are now in search of a replacement. I suspect Mack, notified the Front Office of his plan. The Centre position in Shanahan's offense is a pivotal position, the complex make up of his scheme requires the Centre to help the QB and the O-Line.  The team now have 4 Centre's to look at, Jake Brendall C#64 drafted in 2016, who has a good pass blocking grade of 69.0 (PFF), Donovan West C#61 drafted in rookie from Arizona State and he may well get some reps during OTA's, Keaton Sutherland C#66 drafted in 2019, has a strong passing grade of 80.1 (PFF) and some league experience with the Bengals and the rookie Jason Poe C#62 and again he will be surely getting some reps over the course of OTA's.

Right Guard – Daniel Brunskill G#60 drafted in 2017. His overall statistics are not the best (offense grade 57.1 PPF), but what impressed me about Brunskill last year, was he ability to show up when it counted and his blocking of Aaron Donald in the games against the Rams.  Also, Brunskill has shown his versatility and can move to Centre, I think this is something that will be explored during OTA's and when training camp comes around later in the summer.

Summary

The O-line development will be a significant focus this week. They are entering a new season with a mobile quarterback, who will move around in the pocket, this will change the dynamics of the plays, he will extend plays and understanding where he is positioned and protecting him is going to be very crucial to how well the season goes.

Either way, it is going to be an interesting week ahead and the team will be better placed for the week’s work.
