Mini Camp – Day 1 – Take Aways

The first day of mini camp is complete and there is a general sense of excitement in the 49ers facility. All the notable veterans report for camp and Nick Bosa, Trent Williams actively took part is sessions. Here are some of my take aways:

O Line

As I mentioned on several previous blogs, the O Line and getting a settled line is a massive priority. Aaron Banks and Jake Brendel seem from the reports coming out of camp, the two players that have the chance to grab the starting positions at Guard and Centre respectively.

Wide Receivers

Unlike last year, this season there is more optimism in the Wide Receiver room. The room now includes:

  • Brandon Aiyuk;
  • Jauan Jennings
  • Danny Gray
  • Ray-Ray McCloud III
  • Marcus Johnson
  • Malik Turner
  • Deebo Samuels

This is younger and more explosive set of wide receivers that the 49ers have had for several years and Shanahan and his team must be excited about the opportunity to develop these players. One note, Danny Gray has a slight hamstring strain and will be miss the next week or so.

Trey Lance

The general opinion is that Trey Lance has been extremely positive and is developing. The team and the players are all supporting him, and he is working hard both on and off the field. In his presser he mentioned that he has spoken to Steve Young, and this only goes to demonstrate the young quarterback’s willingness to gain as much knowledge from all around him. If indeed Steve Young has been talking with him, that is extremely helpful and kudos to Shanahan and Lynch for not being afraid to let Lance talk with the Hall of Famer.

Deebo Samuels

As I mentioned in my blog yesterday, I was sure that Deebo would attend minicamp. His presence on the field, just re-iterates the fact that both parties are working on getting his contract completed. Shanahan’s comments in his presser, illustrated that there is strong open lines of communication and his relationship with Deebo is still as strong as ever. Coaches understand that the players careers are short, and the fact players try to make sure they secure their futures with their contracts.
