The Cornerback Room

Cornerback

The NFC West is going to be extremely competitive this year, the division has two opponents in the Cardinals and Rams, who have two Quarterbacks, in Matthew Stafford and Kyler Murray who can hurt you down the field. All three teams in the division have Elite Wide receiver and the 49ers’ ability to deal with that threat will go along way to deciding whether they can win their division.

As we enter training camp, the 49ers’ have the following cornerbacks on the team’s roster:

  • Ka’Dar Hollman;
  • Marcelino McCrary-Ball
  • Tariq Castro-Fields
  • Tayler Hawkins
  • Samuel Womack
  • Jason Verrett
  • Emmanuel Moseley
  • Darqueze Dennard
  • Charvarius Ward
  • Deommodore Lenoir
  • Donate Johnson
  • Ambry Thomas

I suspect that the team will aim to have at least 5 cornerbacks in their 53-man roster and keep a few on the practice squad (e.g. Donate Johnson).

Here are my 5 Cornerbacks that will make the final 53 squad

Emmanuel Moseley - Moseley provides the team with experience and has developed into a solid cornerback. He will play a key role is helping the team and the younger cornerbacks. He has his injury doubts but I am sure he will make the roster.

Charvarius Ward – This was an excellent free agent signing and his experience and skill sets is a huge upgrade for the team, and the 49ers will need all his experience, skill to help defend Hopkins, Kupp and Metcalf.

Ambry Thomas – Drafted last year, Thomas, was thrown in at the deep end and over the course of the season started to show glimpses of what he can do and how effective he can be. I can see him having a standout training camp and pushing the veterans for a starting role.

Jason Verrett – I am pleased to that the 49ers have given Jason Verrett an opportunity to show his fitness and given him a chance to compete this training camp. We all agree that Verrett is one the best at his position, when he is fit and can lock down one side of the field.

Deommodore Lenoir – Drafted last year, Lenoir started the season with huge amount of promise, but as the season went on, he struggled and that is to be expected. The defensive back position is one of the harder positions in Football and for any rookie they are going have their ups and downs. I am hoping to see him come into this training camp and pushing for a roster spot and challenging the veterans.

Conclusion

The front office have invested in free agency, and in the draft (Samuel Womack, Ambry Thomas and Deommodore Lenoir). They know that the team have a division that is littered with talent at Quarterback and Wide receiver, opposing Head coaches that are aggressive and will push the 49ers defence this year. The cornerbacks must force turnovers, create mistakes, score the odd touchdown to help the team progress and make the playoffs.
